About Us

Rule of Design's dynamic team is made up of creative masterminds and achievers who are knowledgeable about the carwash industry to help you grow your customer base and help you win every customer through great design.


Have you ever worked with a marketing company before, but needed to explain what an express carwash was before you could even get started? You don't have to do that with us. We're carwash enthusiasts and we have a working knowledge of the carwash community and carwash industry. We believe that Rule of Design, Inc. is able to offer the best blend of in-depth sector expertise, a proven ability to quickly comprehend the client’s core business strategy, and agility in conceiving tailor-made solutions for the carwash industry's marketing needs.

I’m Mel Ohlinger, the owner of Rule of Design, Inc. and I'm so happy you are here checking out our carwash marketing company. I'm a military veteran, mom, and artist, and come from a design and technology background in the automotive industry. I first started working with car washes through dealerships and loved the freedom it offered. I got a job at Washworld, Inc. and learned the specifics about inbay automatics. After that introduction, I quickly became obsessed with the rest of the equipment, products, installation, distribution, chemicals, and everything else the car wash industry had to offered. Pretty soon I started seeing my designs and work pop up all over the world. I didn't think it would happen, but I was hooked. I LOVED carwashes.


After my second kiddo was born, I started doing some design work from home. I didn't expect anything much to come of it, but before I knew it we were an actual business. It still blows my mind how quickly that happened (and that it happened). This year, my husband joined me fulltime and we continue to grow and serve the carwash industry. We are an independent, privately-owned, family company. Our culture is far-removed from any short-term logic and is very much about building solid relationships with the companies we work with. We encourage learning, growing, problem solving, and working together to find solutions that work well and look great. And with that, we're so glad you're here! A word from our DOOD

CO-OWNER OF RULE OF DESIGN, INC.

I’m Mike Ohlinger, the DOOD of Rule of Design, Inc. What does that mean? Mostly that I'm into well-fitting acronyms. I have a history of technical writing and creating documentation for the water treatment industry, from user manuals to pricebooks, which ended up being a natural fit for moving over to the car wash sector. My move over to Rule of Design took place back in June of 2022 after being fortunate enough to join Melanie full time. 


I never imagined being in the position that we're currently in, running a business in such an amazing industry --- but here we are! Getting to be in full control over our direction and seeing tangible results in the work that we do for our customers has been extremely rewarding. I'm excited to see what the next few years has in store as we continue to grow and expand. 


Getting to work directly with some manufacturers in the carwash sphere has been one of the highlights for me and is one of my personal goals to expand upon with Rule of Design --- with the main focus of having an opportunity to create clear and engaging user documentation to help installation, repair, and service calls in the field.
